What’s the cost for perks and privilege?

by Craig Leweck, Scuttlebutt Sailing News
I’ve attended enough elite regattas – America’s Cup, Olympics, SailGP – to know that life inside the fence is better than outside. There’s perks and privilege, and while I get in with a media badge, events seek to sell that access.

As the fifth season of SailGP gets underway, they’ve released the costs to be inside the fence, plus a Bring Your Own Boat (BYOB) option, for the following events (USD:

March 15-16 – Los Angeles, CA: Waterfront Grandstands ($80), Waterfront Premium ($200), BYOB (prices from $500)
March 22-23, San Francisco, CA: Waterfront Grandstands ($80), Waterfront Premium ($200), BYOB (prices from $500)
June 7-8 – New York, NY: Waterfront Grandstands ($85), Waterfront Premium ($250), BYOB (prices from $500)
July 19-20 – Portsmouth, Great Britain: Waterfront Grandstands ($76)
August 16-17 – Sassnitz, Germany: Waterfront Grandstands ($78) and BYOB ($498)
October 4-5 – Andalucía – Cádiz, Spain: Waterfront Premium ($173) and BYOB (prices from $367)

For the venues that allow SailGP to sell the water, the league has the BYOB program for recreational users to have premium viewing position inside the exclusion zone. Personally, this is more about a day on the water than watching the racing, and the league should be paying people. Dense spectator fleets provide an impressive backdrop for the broadcast. Like movie extras…
