Standing by for LA28 Sailing Program

It may come as some surprise that the Sailing Program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is not confirmed. World Sailing has presented a tentative plan of ten events – the same plan as Paris 2024 – but the International Olympic Committee must approve it. And they haven’t.

Aside from also not knowing the racing venue, aspiring Olympians are training in boats that everyone assumes will be used in LA28. Fingers crossed!

Some clarity may come at the 144th IOC Session as the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gather March 19-21 at Costa Navarino in Greece. Unfortunately, a massive distraction is the election of the 10th IOC President with seven candidates vying for votes.

IOC President Thomas Bach opens 144th IOC Session with a ‘values first’ message. “The Olympic Games and the values they represent have endured for millennia,” the IOC President said, stressing that “it is these values that make the Olympic Games unique.

“As guardians, it is our duty to unite around these values. These values that should always remind us: we are part of something greater than ourselves. This is why we always have to put values first. This is our responsibility: to carry these values with humble dignity and pass them on to the next generations.”

* World Sailing voted to keep the Paris 2024 Sailing Program for Los Angeles 2028, but the program is not final until the IOC approves all events, which usually occurs between December 2024 and January 2025. To date, this decision has not been made.
