SAN DIEGO – Video shows a rare sighting of Pilot whales caught by local whale watchers Saturday morning.
Whale watchers onboard a San Diego Whale Watch excursion whipped out their phones to catch a pod of at least 30 Pilot whales swimming by the boat.
Crew members say Pilot whales are normally seen in warmer waters near Mexico. They have been intermittently seen in San Diego over the last few decades.
Passengers on the boat were ecstatic for the rare opportunity to see them.
“They were amazing, they kept coming up and looking at us. There was about 30 out there. We were right on the side, we got there first, it was amazing,” said Laurie Larson.
Crew members for the San Diego Whale Watch say the warm waters are bringing more tropical animals up from Mexico.
