Paris 2024: A symbol of deterioration

They say, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” when pursuing an Olympic medal, but when that medal is placed around the neck of the very best, it is fair to say the medal should be pretty good too.

But it has not been six months since the Paris Olympics 2024 ended, and several athletes have already publicly denounced the significant deterioration of their medals, designed by the jeweler Chaumet and produced with recycled iron from the Eiffel Tower. Critics claim the wear is due to poor material quality.

The legacy of the Paris Olympics has been called into question. What was supposed to be an eternal symbol of achievements has turned into a source of frustration for numerous medalists, who have shared images and accounts of the severe deterioration of their awards. The testimony of the affected athletes, based on the visible damage to the medals, is serving to fuel the controversy. – Full report
