Level is intense, Margins are tiny

When Charlie Dalin won the Vendée Globe 2024-25, he shattered the round the world non-stop record by an incredible 9+ days. His 64-day elapsed time covered 27,668 nm at an average speed of 17.79 knots.

Where will the future champions come from? Dalin likes the competitors in the 2025 Transat Paprec. “These are undoubtedly the future winners of the Vendée Globe, in eight or twelve years; so remember their names, tomorrow’s winners are here!”

But where is “here?” The Transat Paprec attracted 19 doublehanded mixed teams for the start on April 20, with the entrants for the 17th edition racing identical 36-foot Figaro Beneteau 3s across the Atlantic Ocean from Concarneau to Saint-Barthélemy.

“It’s a tough race to win,” said Dalin, who won the 2012 edition. “Even fast duos or those with a strong handle on their boat can’t rely on speed alone. Strategic choices make all the difference. Often, it’s the outsiders who win — those who dare to break away from the fleet, push a bold option. You have to believe in your strategy. The level is intense, and the margins are tiny.”

Formerly known as the Transat AG2R, it is held every two years and is the only transatlantic race held on equal terms. Started in 1992, the format changed in 2023 to require the duos be made up of a woman and a man. The elapsed record for the 3890 nm course is 18:05:08:03 set in 2021 during the first year with the Figaro Beneteau 3.
