How To Change an O-Ring on Your Scuba Gear

When it comes to scuba diving gear, an O-ring can be a lifesaver. This small, usually plastic, ring is designed to stop the passing of air or liquid. So, essentially, it either keeps water out of or gas inside your gear while you’re diving. But, this crucial gear component often deteriorates, leaving you in a tough spot if you’re getting ready to dive. Don’t be that unprepared diver — check out these tips for changing an O-ring.

How To Change an O-Ring

• If possible, remove without tools by pushing O-ring to form a loop
• Use care to avoid damaging the O-ring when pulling over threads
• If you need a tool, use one designed for O-rings
• Carefully work the tool under the O-ring, being careful not to damage the O-ring groove
• Thoroughly clean the groove and all areas the O-ring will contact — any debris including hair can cause a leak
• Lightly lubricate with proper grease — high O2 content (over 40 percent) applications require special lubricant
• Install the O-ring by stretching as little as possible and easing over threads
• Reassemble carefully and slowly to avoid binding on O-ring
