CHICAGO (NewsCore) – There are Groupon dining bargains, Groupon deals-of-the-day and now there’s the ultimate underwater Groupon: a visit to the sunken remains of the Titanic, purchased by one lucky buyer Tuesday for $12,500.
Given that the price for the other 19 people on the 13-day expedition is $59,680, the Groupon website trumpets, the unidentified buyer saved $47,180.
Included in the package is an ocean tour with what the website describes as “a team of scientists, engineers, and RMS Titanic historians,” the chance to descend 12,500 feet to the ocean floor in a deep-sea craft to explore the ship’s wreckage and a DVD of the movie “Titanic” signed by a Leonardo DiCaprio impersonator.
Asked if those spending almost $60,000 for the voyage might be more than a little unhappy that someone got such a cut-rate deal, Groupon communications coordinator Erin Yeager said no.
“Groupon has been offering deals on experiences at steep discounts for three years,” she said, “and not experienced this sentiment.”
