Caymans: Picture perfect day as dive statue is put in place

The Guardian of the Reef, Cayman’s latest dive attraction, is already attracting plenty of attention from scuba divers.

The bronze statue drew scores of onlookers, including a bevy of underwater photographers, as it was lowered into place on Saturday just off DiveTech’s Lighthouse Point site in West Bay.

More than 60 divers had visited the statue by the end of the day.

The Cayman Islands Tourism Association is confident it will add a new dimension to the island’s shore diving scene.

Jane Scaletta, executive director of CITA, said, “North West Point is already a beautiful site. There is a mini reef there and it is a pleasant place to shore dive or snorkel. Having the statue there makes it an even more interesting site for people to visit.”

The statue was on display at Lighthouse Point for several weeks before it was officially introduced to the public in a commissioning ceremony on Friday.

It was taken by truck to George Town where it was lowered into the water and towed back to West Bay before being sunk in its final resting spot on a sandy flat around 60 feet below the surface.
