Sailing is not an easy activity. You need costly equipment, access to a venue, and appropriate guidance. These hurdles hasten entrance… a pain also felt by golf which is now utilizing superheroes to turn the tide of attrition.
To encourage youth activity, the United States Golf Association (USGA) is teaming up with Marvel Entertainment, one of the world’s most prominent character-based entertainment companies, to create a range of exclusive golf products to connect with the younger generation.
This year’s US Open major, which is organized by the USGA, will see the launch of a printed and digital comic book featuring Marvel superheroes teach each other about the basics of playing golf. The collaboration will also lead to the distribution of Marvel-themed golf posters with lessons for youngsters learning about the game.
“We’re excited for this opportunity to introduce and teach the game of golf to a junior audience in a way that’s completely unique,” said USGA chief executive Mike Davis. “Utilizing the power of the Marvel Universe will help us introduce the game to potential new golfers while also giving our existing players a fun new way to learn.”
The new publications will see the end of the Peanuts/Snoopy educational rule books which the USGA has offered to young fans for more than 30 years.
Michael Pasciullo, senior vice president of marketing and communications at Marvel Entertainment, added: “For 80 years, comic books have been at the core of the Marvel Universe, introducing fans of all ages to new adventures, ideas, and experiences through visual storytelling.
“We’re thrilled to be teaming up with the USGA to use our iconic heroes and that storytelling to inspire the next generation of athletes and golfers.”
Could sailing do this too?
