Barcelona has been saying no lately after hosting the 37th America’s Cup. In the same week the Catalonia capital told Team New Zealand that they would not be paying to host the 38th edition, Barcelona City Council have voted against returning as a host to the Olympic Games.
While the 1992 Games are still hailed as one of the most successful ever, and despite being considered for its logistical advantages, past experience and marquee location, the Spanish city declined to repeat as host as it currently faces the pressing challenges of tourist massification.
Even with the still radiant afterglow of Paris 2024 in neighboring France’s rearview mirror, also a positive experience for organizers, fans and media members, local lawmakers opted against the Catalan capital’s involvement in the renewed project. – Full report
