“(In the medal race) We were just controlling the fleet, we didn’t care who was first, second or third. We were just staying close to the American, Austrian and French – the three boats who could pass us. It was tricky. At one point America was first and we were eighth, it was so much up and down, but we managed to finish sixth.
We won the regatta without winning any of the races.
It’s nice, different winds, I think there will be some surprises next year in the World Championships as well.
We stayed in the centre of the city, it was good for us.
We’ve missed out on a medal at two regattas this year (the Europeans and class worlds) we finished 7th with double OCS and 5th with double OCS – one in the medal race.”

Deniz (one and a half years older):

“It’s the second time we’ve been here, the other was the 2015 Europeans
We wanted to be here to get more experience of the race course for next year, this week went well for us and I hope next year as well.
We feel comfortable here. But we’re from Turkey, so the summer is not the same as here.
The most important regatta next year is here.
We thought if we don’t get any letters (OCS etc.) here we can a win a medal.”
