Japanese Whale meat stocks shrink to 15-year low

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Whale meat inventories have been declining markedly, hitting 1,157 tons at the end of May, the lowest level since the 817 tons in March 2000, Fisheries Agency data have revealed.

This is because Japan caught no whale during this year’s research mission in January-March in the Antarctic Ocean following a March 2014 ruling by the International Court of Justice that banned the nation from conducting research whaling in the ocean.

In the latest mission, the Japanese research team carried out only visual checks to confirm whale resources in the Antarctic Ocean.
