Olympics want pop, not fizz

Surfing made its debut as an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2020 Games as an initiative by the International Olympic Committee to attract youthful interest and heighten excitement. But as the sport prepares for Los Angeles 2028, it apparently isn’t as cool as it thought.

Surfing is lamenting the IOC decision to exclude a longboard event from the Los Angeles 2028 program. For the uninitiated, longboard is a traditional surfing discipline using longer boards and characterized by a more fluid style, as opposed to the hyper-active tricks in the Olympic short board event.

To appease the IOC, Sailing made significant changes to its events to heighten performance, and adding a longboard event to the Olympics would be on the level of retaining the Finn which Sailing eliminated after Tokyo 2020. While both longboard surfing and the Finn have significant worldwide appeal, the IOC wants pop, not fizz.

For 330 athletes, Sailing has equal medals and participation for men and women.
