US Sailing and the NBC Sports Group are partnering to present World Sailing’s prestigious Hempel World Cup Series to U.S. viewers on the Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, OlympicChannel.com, the Olympic Channel app, NBCSports.com, and the NBC Sports app.
Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA is a network dedicated to year-round coverage of Olympic sports competitions and athletes, and will televise competition from World Sailing’s Hempel World Cup Series in 2019-2020, a first for U.S. viewers. The Hempel World Cup Series, organized by World Sailing, is an annual series of Olympic-class sailing featuring the world’s best sailors.
“As the U.S. home of the Olympics through 2032, we’re excited to provide even more coverage of the excitement and beauty of sailing, which has been an Olympic sport since the modern Games began in 1896,” said Jim Bell, President, Production and Programming, NBC Olympics. “Part of sailing’s appeal is that the athletes not only compete against each other, but also against the sea, which always provides for compelling television.”
The Hempel World Cup Series is an annual circuit of Olympic sailing for elite and professional sailors, and a key touchpoint for fans and media to connect to the sport of sailing and develop support for athletes on their road to Tokyo 2020 Olympics and beyond. Over 2,000 of the world’s leading sailors, representing 75 nations, have competed in the World Cup Series since its inception in 2008.
“We are very pleased to enter a new US Sailing partnership with NBC Sports Group to showcase the sport of sailing to an American audience through the Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA,” said Peter Glass, Chief Marketing Officer of US Sailing. “Through our collaborative partnership with World Sailing, this will allow sailing fans a premiere viewing experience and consistent ability to follow US Sailing Team athletes competing against the world’s best around the globe. This partnership represents a key step forward, as US Sailing is committed to attracting new fans and building sport participation.”
