The small Caribbean Island Nation of Antigua and Barbuda will host the 2019 Optimist World Championship with an expectation of 300 young sailors from over 50 countries.
Antigua and Barbuda bid was selected over bids from China, Sir Lanka, and Tunisia, a significant achievement for such small islands, especially after the devastating effects of the 2017 hurricanes.
A beautiful island boasting 365 beaches, Antigua will host the championship at Nelson’s Dockyard, the only working Georgian dockyard in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Racing will be held July 8-15 which is s a traditionally quiet period of the year for the region.
